Bridge Collapse In Minneapolis, Minnesota

Hey,

I can't believe what I am seeing on my local news. I just can't. I live in rural Minnesota, at least three hours away from the Metro (Minneapolis/St. Paul), and had woken from a nap to find out that an entire bridge collapsed on 35W. I have crossed that bridge at least once. It's awful to see it on TV. It's awful to read the articles on the internet, and it's awful to think how many people are hurt or worse in this tragic accident.

Here is an article about the bridge collapse. I just hope that not too many people will die in this.

I heard they had been doing construction on the bridge

The construction, as far as I've heard, was only surface work, such as new concrete in the surface area of the road. They hadn't done anything to the underside.

Wow. That means it's old problems that weren't corrected through inspection...or perhaps lack of inspection. Hope this is just a fluke and not a pattern. Or they can find out what exactly went wrong.

It had been inspected in 2005 and 2006 as being up to par. I'm afraid it's the fact of this nation's infrastructure. It's old. This bridge was 40 years old. I just hope that this won't happen to any other structures.

Seems that on the National database there were stronger warnings about the need for corrections. If we don't, as a nation, start paying attention to our infrastructure, this isn't going to be rare. I hope the loss of life here will be reason enough to take the issue more seriously.

We had a new update on the integrity of the bridge from the StarTrib that said it was marked as FAILED in 2005. I'm placing the blame soley on our loser of a governor. It's Pointless's fault. He should have FUNDED our road projects instead of saying NO NO NO NO to all of them as he has every year. It was so preventable, and that is unforgiveable.
